二、阅读理解

A) Hundreds of years ago, news was carried from place to place by people on foot or by horse. It took days, weeks and sometimes months for people to receive news. Now it is possible to send words and pictures around the world in seconds. Billions of people learn about news stories of their own country and all over the world every day, either by watching TV or reading newspapers.

Newspapers have been an important part of everyday life since the 18th century. Many countries have hundreds of different newspapers. How do newspaper editors decide which news stories to print? Why do they print some stories and not others? What makes a good newspaper story?

Firstly, it is important to report news stories. TV stations can report news much faster than newspapers. Yet, newspapers give more about the same story. They may also look at the story in another way, or they may print completely different stories to those on TV.

Secondly, a news story has to be interesting and unusual. People don’t want to read stories about everyday life. As a result, many stories are about some kind of danger and seem to be ―bad‖ news. For example, newspapers never print stories about planes landing safely; instead they print stories about plane accidents. Another factor(因素) is also very important in many news stories. Many people are interested in news in foreign countries, but more prefer to read stories about people, places and events in their own country. So the stories on the front page in Chinese newspapers are usually very different from the ones in British, French and American newspapers.

21.According to the passage, how do people learn about news stories in the world now?

A.They carry news stories and tell others from place to place on foot or by horse.

B.They tell each other what they have seen with their eyes.

C.They watch TV or read newspapers.D.They listen to the radio every day.

22.The difference between newspaper stories and TV news reports is that _______ .

A.people can learn more about the same news story from a newspaper

B.people can read the news story more quickly in a newspaper

C.people can read news stories in other countriesD.people can read news stories about their own country

23.To make a good newspaper story, how many factors does the passage talk about?

A.Two. B.Three. C.Five. D.Six.

24.According to the passage, which of the following can you most possibly watch on TV?

A.You often play football with your friends after school.B.Your teacher has got a cold.

C.A tiger in the city zoo has run out and hasn’t been caught.D.The bike in front of your house is lost.

B)I like watching butterflies. Sometimes I think I’m the only girl who notices these quiet but beautiful things. But if it hadn’t been for a crowded restaurant, I wouldn’t have ever noticed Valeri.

Valeri was a new student. She walked to class with her books against her chest and her head down. She talked only when the teacher asked her a question. After a month at our school, she hadn’t made any friend. One day at lunch, most tables being full, I had nowhere to sit. Valeri sat alone, book in hand. I walked over to her, ―Is that a good book?‖ Valeri gave a small nod and went back to reading. ―What’s it about?‖ I asked. After seconds of silence, she looked at me, her eyes shining, ―Well, it’s about a dragon! This boy, Eragon, finds this dragon egg when he goes playing one day. He thinks it’s a rock! The egg hatches(孵化)and Eragon hides the dragon from his cousin and uncle until it gets too big .‖

Two weeks later, I was sitting in the auditorium(礼堂)enjoying the talent show. Then a shy girl walked on stage. I recognized her immediately. Valeri held a violin in one hand and a bow in the other. She started to play. The notes formed a soft, sweet tune(曲调). The auditorium fell completely silent until we realized the music was finished. I smiled to myself. Valeri wasn't just―a quiet girl‖.She knew about wonderful books and could play the violin like nothing I'd ever heard. Like a butterfly, she was beautiful and amazing when you looked closely.

C)A friend asks you to be a volunteer. Your husband asks you to glance over an e-mail he is writing to his boss. You say you’d love to. Really! But..."I don’t have time".

It seems plausible( 有道理的). We’re all busy these days, right? But there are reasons not to use these four words, at least with yourself.

Here’s the big one: is not true. You tell yourself "I don’t have time" to exercise, but we all have 168 hours a week. If someone offered to pay you $100,000 a week to go to the gym for 5 of those 168 hours, you

would probably find the time to do it. Since that isn’t going to happen, this is a more exact description: " It’s not a priority(优先考虑的事)."

There are a million things we could be doing with our time; some are priorities and some are not, even if it’s wrong to say so. Try it. "I’m not going to read to you tonight, sweetie, because it’s not a priority. Daddy’s present priority is to check my e-mails."

Using the words "I don’t have time" keeps us from admitting to the fact that how we spend our time is a choice. It puts the responsibility for our lives on someone else: a boss, a client or a family member.

Better to be truthful: "I have another volunteer job on which I am focusing my energy right now. It is the cause that is most important to me." Or, to your husband "I wish you had mentioned this earlier. Right now,

my priority is to get our children dressed and out of the door for school. I will be available around lunch time if you would like to talk".

29.What does the word "it" in the third paragraph refer to?

C.Checking your husband’s e-mail.D.Telling your friend you won’t be a volunteer.

30.From the third paragraph we can learn that

C.we can earn $100,000 a week by exercisingD.we don’t often regard exercise as a priority

31.Which would be the best answer if your friend asks you to be a volunteer?

A.I have to check my e-mails first.B.I already have a volunteer job that I enjoy.

C.I cannot find any time to do it.D.I have a million things to do.

32.What is the text mainly about?

A.How to be responsible for our lives.B.How to get time to do exercise.

C.How to say no to others without saying "I don’t have time".

D.How we should spend our time reasonably these days.

33.You can find this text in the

D)You may know your mother, but how well do you really know Mothers’ Day? Cards, flowers, sales, TV specials, and a day off for someone who really deserves it — those are what probably come to mind for many people when they think of Mothers’ Day. But there’s more to the story.

The earliest Mothers’ Day celebrations were held during spring in ancient Greece. The celebrations honored Rhea, the mother of the gods. During the 1600’s, England celebrated a day called Mothering

Sunday. On this day even servants(仆人) were given the day off to spend with their families. A mothering cake was even served with the family meal.

In the US, Mothers’ Day began in 1872 when Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the words to the famous song The Battle Hymn of the Republic, suggested it as a day devoted to peace. But it didn’t really become

popular until 1907 when Anna Jarvis started a campaign to honor mothers. She believed that mothers could help people get over the pain they experienced during the Civil War. The US isn’t alone in devoting a day to mothers. Many other countries including Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Japan, and Belgium also honor their mothers in May. Other countries honor their mothers at different times of the year. Learning more about Mothers’ Day and celebrating Mothers’ Day are important, but probably not as important as understanding what your own mother, or grandmother, or aunt has really done for you. And that will certainly be appreciated more than one day in year.

E) In Europe, many people make friends between their countries through town twinning. Town or city twinning means two towns in different countries agree and decide to become ―twins‖ with a sister-city relationship.

The people find pen friends in the twin town. They exchange newspapers and stamps. The school teachers discuss teaching methods with the teachers in the twin town. Officials visit the twin town for celebrations. Ordinary people travel to the twin town, too, but not very often if it is far away.

Sometimes, schools even exchange their classes for two or three weeks! For example, German middle

school students study for a while at the school in their twin town in Britain, staying with British families. A few months later, their British friends come to study in Germany.

Many British towns are so pleased with the results of the twinning that they set out to find more than one twin town!

Tonbridge, a small town in Kent, for example, has twin towns in both Germany and France. Richmond near London has relationships with Germany, France and even a town in a Balkan(巴尔干半岛的) country!
